Ingredients for Easy Halloween Cookies
- Butter- make sure it's softened
- Brown Sugar- we're using mostly brown sugar for a really chewy cookie
- Granulated White Sugar- some white sugar is used along with the brown sugar to help create crispy edges
- Eggs- two egg yolks are used in these cookies, make sure they're room temperature
- Vanilla- I recommend vanilla bean paste for the best flavor, but vanilla extract works as well!
- Flour-all purpose flour is used to give the cookies the best "chew"
- Cocoa Powder- I recommend using black cocoa powder for the best dark chocolate flavor and deep black color
- Baking Soda & Baking Powder- equal amounts help the cookies rise slightly
- Salt- helps bring out all the flavors in the cookies
- Halloween M&Ms
- Halloween Sprinkles- I recommend using jimmies
- Candy Eyeballs

Step by Step Instructions
Please see recipe card below for complete measurements and bake time!
STEP ONE: In a medium bowl, whisk flour, black cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda and salt together.
STEP TWO: Add softened, unsalted butter, light brown sugar, and granulated sugar to a large bowl. Cream the butter and sugars together with an electric mixer for two minutes, or until light and fluffy. (You can also use a stand mixer with a paddle attachment.)
STEP THREE: Add in the egg yolks and vanilla and mix on medium speed for two minutes, or until the mixture is pale in color and fluffy.

STEP FOUR: Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix on low speed just until combined.
STEP FIVE: Add in the M&Ms and Halloween sprinkles and gently fold them into the cookie dough with a rubber spatula.

STEP SIX: Scoop the dough into 17 balls using a 2-tablespoon capacity cookie scoop. Arrange the dough balls two inches apart on the prepared baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Add extra M&Ms, candy eyeballs and sprinkles on the sides and center of the cookie dough balls. Then bake. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to completely cool. (Some of the eyeballs may melt while baking. I had to swap them out for new ones after baking.)

Pro Tips
For best results, measure your flour properly. This is always my #1 baking tip. Do not ever scoop a measuring cup into your flour. This will always lead to using too much flour. Instead, sprinkle spoonfuls of flour into your measuring cup and swipe excess flour off with the back of a knife. Or better yet, weigh your flour. 1 cup of flour equals 125 grams.
When the cookies are straight out of the oven, scoot a large round cookie cutter around them to give them a perfect circular shape!

They turned out great! Very spooky!
These made a good chewy chocolate cookie. I made them GF with measure for measure flour for a friend of mine. They spread quite a bit, but reshaped easily with a round cookie cutter. Thanks for the spooky recipe!
Can you use regular cocoa and black food coloring?
not sure why mine came out to greasy and flat 🙁
Can the dough be made the night before then baked the next day? Trying to save time the next day. Thanks
Yes!
I made these last Halloween and they were a hit. Made them again today and I still enjoy them!
Not enough flour. Cookies spread out into one giant black oil slick
Super delicious. However, I'm wondering if I could use some black food colouring in these. I struggled to find black cocoa powder 🙁
I also experienced some trouble with this recipe not setting up. The ratio of fat to flour did seem a little off. Any suggestions maybe 1 3/4 flour instead of 1 1/4? I did use a food scale to weigh everything out. I would love to try this recipe again!! Thanks
Delicious cookies 🍪
Hi Jacqueline! The flour measurements have been tested and that is the right amount. I would suggest making sure the butter is not too softened. Sometimes if it's too soft it can cause the dough to be very sticky. You can always try chilling the dough for 15-20 minutes to help firm it up if you're finding it to be too sticky!
